TVET Colleges Higher Certificate
Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges, by definition, provide vocational or occupational training. This means that the education and training of the student will be targeted to a specific set of jobs, career routes, or commercial opportunities.
TVET Colleges can provide courses in agriculture, arts and culture, business, hospitality, commerce and management, education, training and development, engineering, manufacturing and technology, services, building construction, and security.
A Higher Certificate is a qualification that focuses on talents. Its goal is to provide a student with specific skills that will allow them to gain a basic understanding of their subject of study as well as some practical experience.
The majority of Higher Certificate study programs are vocational. This indicates that the course content is relevant to the industry. It will enable you to enrol in a higher-level course, such as an advanced certificate or diploma, in the same or a related field of study. TVET Colleges Higher Certificate
The certificates offered at TVET colleges:
The two main courses offered by TVET colleges are National Certificate (Vocational) qualifications, the NC (V), and. National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED) programmes, also referred to as “Report 191” programmes.
National Certificate Vocational – (NCV)
(NCV) programs normally begin after grade 9 and last three years, taking you from an NQF level 2 qualifications (grade 9) to an NQF level 4 qualification. This is the same level as regular matriculation, which means you can apply to most technical universities and some university courses. TVET College offers higher certificate programs.

Report 191 Programmers’
These programs are engineering-specific and prepare you for a variety of engineering vocations or a national diploma in engineering studies. These courses are not equivalent to degrees given by South African universities, but they do qualify you to pursue a national diploma in engineering and then a B Tech degree in engineering. National Introductory Certificates and National Certificates
After completing either an (NCV) or a Report 191 qualification, you can pursue National Introductory Certificates and National Certificates. National Introductory Certificates are frequently used to qualify you for a National Certificate without having to repeat some of your post-secondary education.

What do we call registered certificates offered at TVET Colleges?
The registered certificates from TVET are technical certificates and generally, they are called diplomas in a specific technology. These are proper technical programs that are then evaluated as well and based on evaluation, people get these diplomas.
Also, the duration of such diplomas are a bit more than usual training extending to several months or even a year or two as well TVET colleges offer different types of career-focused vocational programmes designed specifically to prepare young people to enter the labour market or to become entrepreneurs who start and run their own businesses.
Once people become active in the labour market, a range of other career opportunities open up. Many careers will require college graduates to complete additional qualifications. Some colleges offer up to 300 different courses.
Documents needed to apply
Prior to applying to the college, the following documents are required:
- 3 certified copies of ID of Learner
- 3 certified copies of ID of Parent/Legal Guardian
- One ID size photo
- Copy Certified of latest school report/Grade 9 or Higher
- A unique Email address and cell phone number
Admission Requirements
N1-N3 ENGINEERING PROGRAMMES / ARTISAN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
- Access to these programmes is only for those who wish to pursue an artisan pathway
- Candidates must preferably have a Grade 12 (NSC) with Mathematics and Physical Science, NOT Mathematical Literacy
- New students must enrol for all 4 subjects in the particular field, of which Mathematics is mandatory
- After completing N2, students must be placed at an employer for work experience for a period of 2 years in preparation for the trade test
The number of enrolments in this programme is subject to the approved DHET prescripts and targets
N4-N6 PROGRAMMES / ALTERNATIVE POST-MATRIC PROGRAMMES
- Candidates must have a Grade 12 (NSC)
- Enrolment in the N4 – N6 Engineering Programmes is subject to candidates having passed the relevant school subjects
- New students must enrol for all 4 subjects in the particular field
- The number of enrolments in these programmes is subject to the approved DHET prescripts and targets
- Students who enrol for N4 – N6 Programmes must comply with the required number of working hours in the relevant field of study before a National N Diploma will be issued (18 months / 2000 hours for semester programmes and 24 months / 2670 hours for trimester programmes
Foreign students
